Heel Pain

Heel Pain in Chantilly & Woodbridge, VA

Heel pain is a common problem, and it can develop from many causes. Whatever the source of your heel pain, your podiatrist can help you get relief.

What Causes Heel Pain?

There are several factors that can cause heel pain, including walking on hard objects, which can bruise your heel, or developing excess calcium deposits on your heel, which can cause a heel spur. Overuse and stress from running, jogging, or walking on hard floors can lead to a painful condition known as plantar fasciitis.

There are also several medical conditions that can lead to heel pain including Achilles tendinitis or rupture of the Achilles tendon, bursitis, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, peripheral neuropathy due to diabetes, and stress fractures.

What You Can Do at Home To Relieve Mild Heel Pain

For mild heel pain, you can try:

  • Icing your heel for 15 minutes several times each day
  • Doing arch stretches several times each day
  • Taking over-the-counter anti-inflammatory and pain medication
  • Wearing heel inserts in your shoes
  • Wearing more supportive, comfortable shoes

How Your Podiatrist Can Help With Heel Pain

You should visit your podiatrist for professional treatment of heel pain if your heel pain is getting worse and hasn’t responded to home therapies. When heel pain impacts your daily life, it’s time to see a specialist for relief. Your podiatrist is an expert at diagnosing what is causing your heel pain and treating your heel pain. Common professional treatments for heel pain include:

  • Being fitted with a custom orthotic or custom footwear to support your heels
  • Physical therapy and arch stretches to enhance flexibility
  • Prescription-strength anti-inflammatory medication to limit swelling
  • Corticosteroid injections around your heel to reduce inflammation and pain

In severe cases involving Achilles tendon rupture, stress fractures, and other severe injuries, surgery may be indicated. Your podiatrist can discuss this option with you.
